Course Introduction

Effective early warning systems (EWS) are critical to reducing the impacts of climate variability on agriculture, food production, and community livelihoods. This course equips participants with practical knowledge to design, implement, and manage climate early warning systems that enhance food security.

Participants will explore the science of climate and weather monitoring, forecast interpretation, and risk assessment, enabling timely responses to droughts, floods, storms, and other climate hazards affecting food systems.

The course emphasizes the integration of technology, including remote sensing, GIS, digital platforms, and real-time monitoring tools, for accurate and actionable climate forecasts and alerts.

Through case studies and practical exercises, learners will examine how early warning systems reduce losses, support decision-making for farmers, and guide policy and program interventions for resilient food production.

Participants will gain skills in stakeholder coordination, community engagement, and communication strategies to ensure early warnings reach vulnerable populations and enable rapid, effective response.

By the end of the course, participants will be capable of developing, operating, and evaluating climate early warning systems, strengthening food security, enhancing resilience, and reducing risk in agriculture and related sectors.
