Course Introduction

Climate change is increasingly recognized as one of the most significant threats to global water security and environmental sustainability. This course provides a comprehensive understanding of how climate variability, extreme weather events, and long-term environmental shifts are affecting water availability, quality, and ecosystem resilience across different regions of the world.

The program explores the scientific foundations of climate change, including greenhouse gas emissions, global temperature rise, and hydrological cycle disruptions. It connects these global drivers to local and regional water systems, demonstrating how climate processes directly influence water supply, drought frequency, flood risks, and ecosystem stability.

Participants will examine the concept of water security in depth, focusing on availability, accessibility, quality, and sustainable management of freshwater resources. The course emphasizes the interdependence between water systems and socio-economic development, highlighting how water insecurity can affect agriculture, health, energy, and livelihoods.

A key focus is placed on environmental sustainability frameworks that integrate climate adaptation and mitigation strategies. Learners will explore ecosystem-based approaches, nature-based solutions, and integrated water resource management systems designed to build resilience against climate-related risks.

The course also introduces advanced tools and methodologies for climate and water analysis, including climate modeling, hydrological forecasting, GIS applications, and environmental risk assessment techniques. These tools support evidence-based planning and policy development for sustainable water governance.

By the end of the course, participants will be able to critically analyze climate-water interactions, design water security strategies, and contribute to environmental sustainability initiatives that enhance resilience at local, national, and global levels.
