Course Introduction

Climate change is reshaping food security dynamics, creating uncertainties in agricultural production, distribution, and access. The Climate Change Risk Indicators for Food Security Course equips participants with the analytical skills and tools to identify, monitor, and manage climate-related risks that threaten food systems globally.

Participants will learn how to assess climate risks using key indicators such as temperature and rainfall variability, drought frequency, soil health, crop yield trends, and socioeconomic vulnerabilities. Understanding these indicators is essential for designing effective adaptation strategies and interventions in food systems.

The course emphasizes integrating climate risk assessment into food security planning, early warning systems, and policy frameworks. Participants will gain insights into how data-driven decision-making can strengthen resilience, improve agricultural productivity, and safeguard livelihoods in climate-affected regions.

Through hands-on training and case studies, participants will explore methods for developing, calibrating, and validating climate risk indicators. The program highlights real-world applications in monitoring, reporting, and designing mitigation and adaptation strategies for agriculture, nutrition, and food distribution systems.

Participants will also examine the institutional, governance, and socio-economic dimensions of climate risk management, including how policies, market access, and stakeholder engagement influence adaptive capacity. Emphasis is placed on inclusive approaches that protect vulnerable communities and smallholder farmers.

By the end of the course, participants will be able to identify and apply climate risk indicators effectively, conduct robust assessments, and inform evidence-based policy and program interventions. They will be empowered to strengthen food system resilience under changing climate conditions.
