Course Introduction

Climate change poses unprecedented risks to global food systems, challenging governance structures, policy frameworks, and institutional capacities. The Climate Change Risk Governance for Food Systems Course provides participants with a comprehensive understanding of managing, regulating, and coordinating risks to ensure resilient and sustainable food systems.

This course emphasizes the intersection of climate science, risk management, and policy analysis. Participants will explore governance frameworks at local, national, and international levels, learning how to integrate climate risk considerations into food security planning, disaster preparedness, and adaptation strategies.

Participants will engage with practical tools for risk assessment, scenario modeling, and stakeholder mapping. The program provides hands-on experience in designing governance mechanisms, regulatory frameworks, and coordination protocols that enhance transparency, accountability, and effective decision-making in food systems.

The course addresses emerging challenges including extreme weather events, supply chain disruptions, market volatility, and social inequalities. Participants will learn to develop inclusive, multi-stakeholder approaches that strengthen food system resilience and ensure equitable access to resources and opportunities.

Emphasis is placed on policy formulation, monitoring, and evaluation. Participants will explore approaches to integrate climate risk governance into national adaptation plans, disaster risk reduction frameworks, and sustainable development policies while considering cross-sectoral collaboration and financing mechanisms.

By the end of the course, learners will be able to design, implement, and evaluate climate risk governance strategies that mitigate vulnerabilities, strengthen institutional capacity, and guide evidence-based decision-making to protect food systems under a changing climate.
