Course Introduction

Climate change negotiations and environmental diplomacy are central to shaping the global response to climate crises. This course provides participants with a deep understanding of how international climate agreements are formed, negotiated, and implemented across diverse geopolitical and economic contexts.

The program explores the evolution of global climate governance, including landmark agreements such as the Kyoto Protocol and the Paris Agreement. Participants will examine how diplomatic negotiations influence national commitments, emission reduction targets, and global sustainability pathways.

A key focus of the course is the structure and dynamics of international climate negotiations under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). Participants will learn how negotiation blocs, alliances, and power dynamics shape outcomes in global environmental diplomacy.

The training also examines negotiation strategies, diplomatic communication techniques, and consensus-building approaches used by state and non-state actors. Participants will gain practical insights into how to advocate for national interests while maintaining global cooperation on climate action.

Special attention is given to climate finance negotiations, loss and damage discussions, technology transfer mechanisms, and equity considerations between developed and developing countries. These elements are critical in shaping fair and effective global climate agreements.

By the end of the course, participants will be equipped with the knowledge and skills to participate in or support climate negotiations, engage in environmental diplomacy processes, and contribute to shaping global climate governance frameworks.
