Course Introduction

Climate change decision-making has become increasingly complex as governments and institutions face uncertain environmental, economic, and social conditions. Decision Support Systems (DSS) provide structured, data-driven tools that help policymakers make informed, transparent, and effective decisions. This course introduces how these systems work and how they can improve climate policy outcomes.

Many policy decisions fail due to limited data integration, poor forecasting, and lack of analytical tools. This course explains how Decision Support Systems combine climate data, models, and analytical frameworks to improve planning, forecasting, and policy evaluation in real time.

Participants will learn how to use data-driven tools to assess climate risks, compare policy options, and evaluate long-term impacts. The course focuses on practical applications that support real policy environments, helping decision-makers reduce uncertainty and improve accuracy in climate-related choices.

The program also explores how DSS platforms integrate with national planning systems, climate models, and geographic information systems (GIS). These technologies allow policymakers to visualize risks, simulate scenarios, and understand complex climate interactions more clearly.

Real-world case studies will be used to show how governments and institutions apply Decision Support Systems in climate adaptation, disaster risk reduction, and sustainable development planning. These examples highlight both successful implementations and common challenges.

By the end of the course, participants will be able to understand, design, and apply Decision Support Systems in climate policy contexts. They will gain practical skills to support evidence-based decision-making and improve policy effectiveness under uncertainty.
