Course Introduction

Climate change increasingly threatens global food systems, disrupting markets, production, and livelihoods. This course equips participants with economic analysis tools to evaluate the financial, social, and policy impacts of climate variability on food security. Participants will learn to quantify risks, assess costs, and design cost-effective interventions to safeguard food systems and communities against climate-related shocks.

The course focuses on integrating economic modeling with climate and agricultural data to inform policy and investment decisions. Participants will explore frameworks for assessing vulnerability, market disruptions, and the socioeconomic consequences of climate change, providing actionable insights for governments, NGOs, and the private sector.

Learners will gain expertise in economic evaluation methods, including cost-benefit analysis, risk-adjusted investment modeling, and scenario-based forecasting. The course demonstrates how these techniques guide evidence-based planning, prioritize resources, and ensure efficient allocation in food systems under climate stress.

A key element is understanding policy and institutional dimensions of climate risk economics. Participants will analyze how regulations, incentives, and governance structures can influence agricultural investment, market stability, and food security, while promoting equitable and sustainable adaptation measures.

The program explores emerging tools and innovations, including climate-smart agriculture, digital analytics, and financial instruments for adaptation. Participants will learn to incorporate these innovations into economic models and strategic planning frameworks to enhance resilience, sustainability, and long-term food system viability.

By the end of the course, participants will be able to conduct comprehensive economic assessments of climate risks, design investment and policy strategies, and communicate results to stakeholders. Graduates will be positioned to lead programs that ensure resilient, adaptive, and economically sustainable food systems globally.
