Course Introduction

Climate change is profoundly impacting post-harvest food systems, causing losses, reducing quality, and threatening food security worldwide. The Climate Change Adaptation in Post Harvest Food Systems Course provides participants with in-depth knowledge and practical skills to design and implement adaptation strategies that minimize losses, enhance resilience, and ensure food availability across diverse contexts.

The course emphasizes understanding climate-induced risks such as temperature fluctuations, humidity extremes, pest proliferation, and flooding that affect storage, transport, and processing of agricultural produce. Participants will explore evidence-based interventions to maintain product quality, reduce spoilage, and strengthen post-harvest value chains under variable climatic conditions.

Participants will learn practical tools for risk assessment, climate-smart storage, processing, and supply chain management. Case studies illustrate successful adaptation strategies from local, regional, and international contexts, providing insights into scalable solutions that sustain post-harvest efficiency.

Emerging technologies including smart storage solutions, IoT-enabled monitoring, predictive climate models, and mechanization for handling perishable goods are integrated into the curriculum. Learners gain skills to evaluate, select, and implement these technologies to mitigate climate-induced losses in post-harvest systems.

The course also examines policy, governance, and institutional frameworks that support resilient post-harvest food systems. Focus is placed on integrating climate finance, social protection mechanisms, and gender-sensitive approaches to ensure inclusive and sustainable adaptation strategies.

By the end of the course, participants will be equipped to design, implement, and monitor climate-resilient post-harvest systems. They will be able to optimize storage, handling, and processing techniques, contributing to sustainable food security and economic resilience under changing climate conditions.
