Course Introduction

Climate change is one of the most pressing global challenges of the 21st century, significantly affecting ecosystems, livelihoods, economies, and human well-being. Rising temperatures, unpredictable rainfall patterns, droughts, floods, and extreme weather events are increasingly undermining development gains. This course equips NGO professionals with the knowledge and practical skills needed to design and implement climate change adaptation and resilience programmes effectively.

Communities, especially those in vulnerable and low-income regions, are disproportionately affected by climate change impacts due to limited adaptive capacity and weak institutional systems. These impacts threaten food security, water availability, health systems, and livelihoods. This training provides participants with tools to identify climate risks and integrate adaptation strategies into development and humanitarian programming.

NGOs play a critical role in supporting communities to build resilience against climate shocks and stresses. However, many organizations lack structured frameworks for mainstreaming climate change adaptation into their operations. This course addresses this gap by strengthening institutional capacity to design climate-smart interventions and resilience-building initiatives.

Effective climate change adaptation requires an interdisciplinary approach that combines environmental science, disaster risk reduction, sustainable development, and community engagement. It also requires coordination between governments, donors, civil society, and the private sector. This training introduces participants to integrated programming approaches that enhance adaptive capacity at multiple levels.

Climate change is not only an environmental issue but also a development, governance, and equity challenge. Marginalized populations, including women, youth, and rural communities, often face the highest risks. This course emphasizes inclusive and participatory adaptation strategies that ensure equitable access to resources and resilience-building opportunities.

Through practical case studies, scenario analysis, and participatory exercises, participants will gain hands-on experience in designing, implementing, and evaluating climate change adaptation programmes. The course bridges theory and practice to enable real-world application in diverse NGO contexts
