Course Introduction

Climate change poses unprecedented threats to fisheries and aquatic food systems, affecting species distribution, productivity, and ecosystem health. This course provides participants with the knowledge and practical skills to develop adaptive strategies that sustain fisheries while safeguarding food security.

Participants will explore the intersection of climate variability, marine and freshwater ecosystems, and human livelihoods. Emphasis is placed on assessing vulnerabilities and designing interventions that enhance resilience of fish stocks, aquaculture operations, and associated value chains.

The course covers climate-smart fisheries management practices, including ecosystem-based approaches, adaptive governance, and sustainable resource utilization. Participants will learn to integrate scientific research with local knowledge for practical solutions.

Through case studies and applied exercises, learners will understand how climate change affects catch composition, fish migration patterns, and aquaculture productivity, enabling them to anticipate changes and implement responsive adaptation measures.

Participants will also gain insights into policy frameworks, financial instruments, and institutional mechanisms that support climate-resilient fisheries and food systems. This includes tools for monitoring, evaluation, and stakeholder engagement at local, regional, and national levels.

By the end of the course, participants will have the skills to design, implement, and monitor climate adaptation strategies, ensuring sustainable fisheries, resilient aquaculture, and stable food supply chains under changing climatic conditions.
