Course Introduction

Children are among the most vulnerable populations affected by armed conflict, natural disasters, disease outbreaks, forced displacement, climate-related crises, and complex humanitarian emergencies. Emergencies often disrupt family structures, education systems, healthcare services, and community protection mechanisms, exposing children to heightened risks of abuse, neglect, exploitation, violence, trafficking, family separation, and psychosocial distress. Child Protection in Emergencies (CPiE) seeks to prevent and respond to these risks while ensuring that children's rights, safety, dignity, and well-being remain central to humanitarian action. This course provides practical knowledge and tools for implementing effective child protection interventions in emergency settings.

Humanitarian crises create environments where existing child protection systems may be weakened or collapse entirely. Children may become separated from caregivers, recruited into armed groups, subjected to harmful practices, exposed to gender-based violence, or denied access to essential services. Effective child protection programming requires a comprehensive understanding of protection risks, humanitarian standards, legal frameworks, and evidence-based intervention strategies. Participants will gain practical competencies for identifying vulnerabilities, assessing risks, and implementing child-centered responses that strengthen protective environments during emergencies.

The international humanitarian community has established numerous frameworks and standards to guide child protection interventions in emergency contexts. These include the Child Protection Minimum Standards (CPMS), the Convention on the Rights of the Child, humanitarian principles, and safeguarding frameworks. Understanding and applying these standards helps organizations deliver quality protection services while ensuring accountability to affected populations. This course explores global best practices and practical approaches for integrating child protection considerations into emergency preparedness, response, and recovery operations.

Community engagement plays a critical role in protecting children during emergencies. Families, caregivers, community leaders, teachers, youth groups, and local institutions all contribute to creating protective environments for children. Effective CPiE programs prioritize participation, inclusion, accountability, and local ownership to strengthen resilience and sustainability. Participants will learn how to work collaboratively with communities to identify risks, develop protective mechanisms, and support child-centered recovery processes that promote long-term well-being and resilience.

Emerging humanitarian challenges such as climate change, protracted displacement, urban crises, digital risks, and public health emergencies continue to shape the child protection landscape. These evolving threats require innovative approaches, adaptive programming, and stronger coordination among humanitarian actors. This course examines emerging trends, technological innovations, and integrated programming approaches that enhance child protection outcomes while addressing complex and rapidly changing emergency environments.

By the end of this course, participants will possess the technical knowledge, practical skills, and operational tools necessary to design, implement, monitor, and evaluate child protection interventions in emergency contexts. They will be equipped to strengthen safeguarding systems, coordinate effective responses, support vulnerable children and families, and contribute to humanitarian programs that uphold children's rights and promote protection, resilience, and recovery.
