Course Introduction

Catchment and watershed systems are the foundation of sustainable water security, ecosystem health, and climate resilience. This course provides a comprehensive understanding of how land, water, and ecological processes interact within drainage basins and catchment areas.

The program explores how upstream activities such as agriculture, deforestation, urbanization, and industrial development influence downstream water quality, availability, and ecosystem stability. Participants will learn integrated approaches to watershed protection.

A key focus is placed on sustainable catchment planning, emphasizing soil conservation, erosion control, and land use management strategies that protect water resources. The course highlights the importance of balancing human needs with ecosystem integrity.

Participants will also examine hydrological processes including runoff, infiltration, groundwater recharge, and sediment transport. These processes are essential for designing effective watershed management interventions and restoration programs.

The course further addresses policy, governance, and institutional frameworks that support integrated catchment management. It also highlights community participation as a key driver of successful watershed protection.

By the end of the course, learners will be able to design, implement, and evaluate catchment management strategies that enhance water security, biodiversity conservation, and climate resilience.

Duration

5 days
