Course Introduction

Carbon markets are rapidly evolving as one of the most significant mechanisms for financing global climate action. This course provides a comprehensive exploration of the legal frameworks, regulatory systems, and international standards that govern carbon credit generation, trading, and compliance across jurisdictions.

Participants will develop a strong understanding of how international climate agreements such as the Paris Agreement shape carbon market rules and institutional structures. The course examines how countries implement legal frameworks to regulate emissions trading systems and voluntary carbon markets.

A key focus is placed on the integrity of carbon credits, including additionality, permanence, leakage, and verification standards. Learners will analyze how legal systems ensure environmental credibility and prevent market manipulation or greenwashing.

The program explores institutional arrangements and governance structures that oversee carbon credit certification, issuance, and registry systems. It highlights the role of designated national authorities, independent verification bodies, and international standard-setting organizations.

Special attention is given to cross-border carbon trading, Article 6 mechanisms, and the harmonization of standards between compliance and voluntary markets. Case studies illustrate how legal frameworks are applied in real-world carbon trading systems across different regions.

By the end of the course, participants will be equipped to interpret, design, and evaluate carbon credit legal frameworks and compliance systems that align with international climate governance and market integrity principles.
