Introduction

Building Maintenance Management is a critical discipline that ensures the functionality, safety, and sustainability of built environments. This course provides participants with the knowledge and skills necessary to plan, implement, and monitor effective maintenance strategies for various types of buildings. Emphasizing both preventive and corrective maintenance, the course covers essential topics such as building systems, maintenance planning, asset management, cost control, safety standards, and the use of modern technologies in maintenance operations. Through a combination of theoretical learning and practical case studies, students will develop a comprehensive understanding of how to maintain building performance, prolong asset life, and enhance operational efficiency.

The proper upkeep and management of buildings are vital for ensuring the safety, comfort, functionality, and longevity of built environments. As buildings age and usage demands increase, the role of maintenance becomes increasingly critical—not only to preserve structural integrity but also to support energy efficiency, regulatory compliance, and occupant satisfaction.

This course in Building Maintenance Management is designed to equip participants with the fundamental principles and practical tools required to manage maintenance activities effectively. It explores the various types of maintenance preventive, corrective, predictive, and condition-based and introduces participants to modern maintenance technologies, such as Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS), Building Information Modeling (BIM), and Internet of Things (IoT) applications in facility management.

Course Objectives

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Create and implement effective maintenance schedules and programs tailored to specific building systems and organizational needs.
  • Describe the importance of maintenance in the overall life cycle of buildings and its impact on safety, performance, and cost efficiency.
  • Identify and explain the various types of maintenance strategies including preventive, corrective, predictive, and condition-based maintenance.
  • Gain foundational knowledge of key building components (e.g., HVAC, plumbing, electrical, structural) and assess their maintenance requirements.
  • Identify potential risks in building maintenance and apply safety protocols in compliance with relevant health, safety, and environmental regulations.
  • Demonstrate the use of modern tools such as Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS), BIM, and IoT for efficient maintenance tracking and decision-making.
  • Analyze maintenance costs and develop strategies for effective budget allocation, resource optimization, and cost-saving measures.
  • Perform audits, inspections, and assessments to monitor building performance and ensure compliance with standards.
  • Integrate energy-efficient and sustainable practices in building maintenance to support environmental stewardship and long-term asset value.
  • Develop skills for clear reporting, documentation, and communication with clients, technicians, contractors, and regulatory bodies.

Course duration

10 days
