Course Introduction

Behavioral insights are increasingly shaping how humanitarian organizations design and deliver programs that better reflect real human decision-making, behavior, and response patterns. This course introduces participants to the principles of behavioral science and how they can be applied to improve humanitarian outcomes.

The program explores how cognitive biases, social norms, heuristics, and decision-making patterns influence how affected populations respond to humanitarian interventions. Participants will learn why people do not always act in predictable or “rational” ways during crises.

A strong focus is placed on applying behavioral science to program design, including cash assistance, health campaigns, protection services, and communication strategies. The course demonstrates how small behavioral “nudges” can significantly improve program uptake and effectiveness.

Participants will also examine field-based research methods such as experiments, surveys, and observational studies used to generate behavioral insights. These methods help practitioners understand barriers to access, trust, and engagement in humanitarian settings.

The course introduces practical tools for designing behaviorally informed interventions, including messaging strategies, choice architecture, and feedback mechanisms. These tools help improve program delivery and beneficiary outcomes.

By the end of the course, participants will be able to integrate behavioral insights into humanitarian programming to enhance effectiveness, increase participation, and improve overall impact in crisis-affected communities.
