Course Introduction

The Bayesian Data Analysis for Applied Research Training Course provides a practical and rigorous foundation for using Bayesian statistical methods to analyze real-world research data. Participants learn how Bayesian reasoning combines prior knowledge with observed evidence to produce updated probability distributions for unknown parameters. The course connects Bayesian theory with applied research questions, helping participants understand how uncertainty can be quantified, communicated, and incorporated directly into statistical analysis and decision-making.

The training begins with the essential concepts underlying Bayesian inference, including prior distributions, likelihood functions, posterior distributions, posterior predictive distributions, credible intervals, and Bayesian evidence. Participants examine how Bayesian methods differ from frequentist approaches and learn how to select prior distributions that are transparent, defensible, and appropriate for the research context. Emphasis is placed on understanding the assumptions behind Bayesian models rather than treating software output as a substitute for statistical reasoning.

Participants develop practical skills in Bayesian estimation and computational inference. The course introduces analytical solutions where available as well as simulation-based approaches such as Monte Carlo methods and Markov chain Monte Carlo. Participants learn how to assess convergence, mixing, effective sample sizes, Monte Carlo error, and posterior sampling quality. Practical exercises demonstrate how computational diagnostics can reveal problems that may otherwise lead to unreliable or misleading posterior conclusions.

The course covers Bayesian regression and other models commonly used in applied research, including linear regression, logistic regression, hierarchical models, count models, and models involving repeated or clustered observations. Participants learn how to interpret posterior distributions, credible intervals, posterior probabilities, predicted outcomes, and uncertainty in model parameters. The training also demonstrates how Bayesian models can incorporate prior information, accommodate complex structures, and provide probabilistic statements that are directly relevant to research questions.

Advanced sessions address hierarchical and multilevel Bayesian models, missing data, model comparison, posterior predictive checking, sensitivity to prior specifications, and Bayesian decision analysis. Participants explore how Bayesian workflows can be used with small datasets, complex research designs, and situations where prior evidence is particularly relevant. Emerging applications involving probabilistic programming, Bayesian machine learning, adaptive research designs, and AI-assisted statistical workflows are introduced alongside discussions of reproducibility, computational transparency, and responsible interpretation.

By the end of the course, participants will be able to formulate Bayesian research models, select and justify prior distributions, conduct posterior inference, evaluate model adequacy, and communicate Bayesian results effectively. They will gain a structured workflow for moving from research questions and data preparation through model specification, computation, diagnostics, interpretation, prediction, and reporting. Practical case studies reinforce the ability to apply Bayesian methods to substantive research problems while clearly communicating uncertainty and methodological assumptions.
