Course Introduction

Balance Sheet Auditing and Account Reconciliation Training Course provides a comprehensive and practical approach to auditing balance sheet accounts and performing effective account reconciliations. Participants will develop the knowledge and techniques required to examine account balances, supporting schedules, reconciliation statements, source documents, and financial records while identifying errors, omissions, unusual movements, and potential misstatements.

The course explores the relationship between balance sheet accounts, general ledger records, subsidiary ledgers, trial balances, supporting documentation, and financial statements. Participants will learn how to assess the existence, completeness, accuracy, valuation, rights and obligations, classification, cutoff, and presentation of significant balance sheet balances through structured audit procedures and reconciliation techniques.

Participants will examine practical approaches to auditing cash and bank balances, receivables, inventory, property and equipment, investments, payables, loans, provisions, leases, equity, taxes, and other balance sheet accounts. Emphasis is placed on matching account balances to reliable supporting evidence, investigating reconciling items, evaluating accounting estimates, and determining whether balances are appropriately reported.

The program gives substantial attention to account reconciliation as a core financial control and audit procedure. Participants will learn how to prepare, review, and audit bank reconciliations, intercompany reconciliations, control account reconciliations, supplier and customer reconciliations, inventory reconciliations, fixed asset reconciliations, payroll reconciliations, and other critical balance sheet reconciliations.

The course also addresses common balance sheet risks, including unsupported balances, aged reconciling items, duplicate entries, unreconciled differences, incorrect classifications, unrecorded liabilities, valuation errors, impairment issues, cutoff errors, and inappropriate journal adjustments. Participants will learn how to investigate exceptions and document evidence-based conclusions and recommendations.

Modern practices are incorporated through coverage of automated reconciliation tools, audit data analytics, artificial intelligence, ERP systems, cloud accounting, continuous monitoring, digital audit trails, and cybersecurity considerations. Participants will consider how technology can improve reconciliation efficiency and audit coverage while creating new risks that require appropriate controls and audit procedures.
