Course Introduction
Automated Coding of Qualitative Research Data using AI Training Course provides researchers and professionals with practical methods for using artificial intelligence to support the systematic coding of qualitative research data. Participants will learn how AI can assist with identifying concepts, assigning codes, organising categories, and discovering patterns across interviews, focus groups, open-ended surveys, documents, and other textual datasets.
Qualitative coding is often one of the most time-intensive stages of research, particularly when projects involve hundreds of interviews, extensive transcripts, or large collections of open-ended responses. This course explores how AI-assisted coding can reduce repetitive analytical work while supporting consistent organisation of qualitative evidence. Participants will learn how to combine automation with researcher judgement rather than treating AI-generated codes as final analytical conclusions.
The programme covers practical approaches for developing codebooks, creating coding instructions, preparing qualitative datasets, generating initial codes, refining categories, and reviewing automated coding outputs. Participants will explore how different AI techniques can support inductive, deductive, thematic, framework, and content analysis while maintaining alignment with research questions and established methodological approaches.
Particular emphasis is placed on prompt engineering and structured AI workflows. Participants will learn how to formulate coding instructions, provide contextual information, define output structures, handle long transcripts, conduct iterative coding, and compare AI-generated codes with researcher decisions. These techniques can help researchers improve analytical efficiency while maintaining consistency and traceability across large qualitative datasets.
Automated qualitative coding also introduces important methodological and ethical considerations. The course examines hallucinations, coding inconsistencies, contextual misunderstanding, cultural and linguistic bias, overgeneralisation, automation bias, privacy concerns, confidentiality, and inappropriate use of sensitive research data. Participants will develop approaches for human validation, inter-coder comparison, audit trails, and transparent reporting of AI involvement.
By completing the Automated Coding of Qualitative Research Data using AI Training Course, participants will be equipped to develop responsible AI-assisted coding workflows that complement established qualitative research practices. The course emphasises practical application, methodological transparency, critical evaluation, ethical data management, and researcher oversight so that automation contributes to more efficient and defensible qualitative analysis.
