Course Introduction

The Audit Sampling and Substantive Testing Training Course provides a practical and comprehensive framework for designing, executing, documenting, and evaluating audit samples and substantive audit procedures. The course explains how auditors determine appropriate testing approaches based on financial statement risks, materiality, assertions, population characteristics, expected errors, and the reliability of available audit evidence.

Effective audit sampling requires more than selecting a convenient number of transactions. Auditors must understand the population being tested, define the sampling objective, determine the appropriate sampling method, consider expected and tolerable misstatement, and evaluate whether the resulting evidence provides a reasonable basis for reaching an audit conclusion. Participants will explore statistical and non-statistical approaches and learn how to apply professional judgment when designing practical audit samples.

The course places strong emphasis on substantive testing and its role in detecting material misstatements. Participants will examine tests of details, substantive analytical procedures, account balance testing, transaction testing, cut-off procedures, recalculations, confirmations, physical verification, and other techniques used to obtain persuasive audit evidence. The relationship between substantive procedures and financial statement assertions will be developed through practical examples and case-based exercises.

A central focus is the evaluation of sampling results and identified exceptions. Auditors must determine whether errors identified within a sample are isolated or indicative of broader population problems. Participants will learn how to evaluate deviations and misstatements, project errors where appropriate, consider qualitative characteristics, investigate unusual items, and determine whether expanded or alternative procedures are required.

The program also addresses how sampling and substantive testing should respond to different risk levels. Participants will explore how higher-risk areas may require more persuasive evidence, targeted testing, larger or differently designed samples, or additional substantive procedures. Particular attention is given to areas involving fraud risks, management estimates, unusual transactions, revenue, expenses, receivables, inventory, liabilities, fixed assets, and financial statement disclosures.

Through practical exercises, audit case studies, sample selection activities, substantive testing scenarios, exception evaluation, and working paper preparation, participants will develop the ability to design efficient and defensible audit tests. The course is intended to help auditors balance audit effectiveness and efficiency while ensuring that sampling decisions, substantive procedures, results, and conclusions are properly documented and supported by appropriate audit evidence.

Comprehensive Course Outline

Module 1: Audit Sampling and Substantive Testing Fundamentals

  • Understanding the purpose of audit sampling and substantive testing and their relationship to audit risk, materiality, assertions, and audit evidence.

  • Distinguishing tests of details from substantive analytical procedures and identifying circumstances where each approach may provide persuasive evidence.

  • Understanding audit populations, sampling units, selection objectives, tolerable error, expected error, and the concept of representative testing.

  • Linking substantive testing strategies to identified financial statement risks and determining the nature, timing, and extent of audit procedures.

Module 2: Audit Risk, Materiality, and Sampling Decisions

  • Applying audit risk assessment principles to determine the level and type of substantive testing required for different financial statement areas.

  • Understanding the relationship between materiality, performance considerations, expected misstatement, tolerable misstatement, and sample size.

  • Assessing inherent and control risks and determining how changes in risk assessment influence substantive audit procedures.

  • Developing risk-responsive sampling strategies that focus audit resources on balances, transactions, and populations with greater potential for material misstatement.

Module 3: Sampling Methods and Sample Design

  • Comparing random, systematic, monetary-unit, stratified, haphazard, and other practical sampling approaches used in audit engagements.

  • Defining the audit population and sampling unit to ensure that the selected sample appropriately addresses the audit objective.

  • Designing samples that provide an appropriate basis for evaluating transaction populations, account balances, and other audit data.

  • Identifying common sample design weaknesses such as incomplete populations, inappropriate selection methods, biased samples, and poorly defined testing objectives.

Module 4: Sample Size Determination and Selection

  • Evaluating the factors that influence sample size, including risk, expected misstatement, tolerable misstatement, population variability, and desired assurance.

  • Applying practical approaches for determining sample sizes while balancing audit effectiveness, efficiency, professional judgment, and available resources.

  • Selecting audit items using appropriate techniques and maintaining clear documentation of the population, selection process, and items tested.

  • Addressing unusual, individually significant, high-value, high-risk, and specifically selected items alongside representative sample testing.

Module 5: Substantive Tests of Transactions

  • Designing transaction testing procedures for revenue, purchases, payroll, expenses, cash movements, journals, and other significant transaction streams.

  • Testing transaction occurrence, completeness, accuracy, authorization, classification, cut-off, and appropriate recording through relevant audit procedures.

  • Applying vouching and tracing techniques to evaluate whether recorded transactions are supported and whether relevant transactions have been completely captured.

  • Documenting transaction testing results, exceptions, supporting evidence, audit conclusions, and follow-up procedures in structured working papers.

Module 6: Substantive Tests of Account Balances

  • Designing substantive procedures for receivables, inventory, cash, fixed assets, investments, liabilities, equity, and other material account balances.

  • Applying confirmations, reconciliations, inspection, recalculation, physical verification, external evidence, and other procedures to test account assertions.

  • Evaluating account balance movements, unusual items, aging information, reconciliations, supporting schedules, and management explanations.

  • Determining when additional procedures, expanded samples, alternative evidence, or specialist involvement may be necessary to support account balance conclusions.

Module 7: Substantive Analytical Procedures

  • Developing reliable expectations for account balances and transactions using financial information, operational data, budgets, trends, ratios, and relevant external information.

  • Assessing the reliability and completeness of data used in analytical procedures before relying on analytical results as substantive evidence.
