Course Introduction

The ArcGIS Field Maps for Infrastructure Inspection and Verification Training Course equips participants with practical skills to plan, conduct, document, and verify infrastructure inspections using mobile geographic information system technology. Infrastructure development programmes depend on reliable field evidence to confirm whether roads, bridges, buildings, water supply systems, drainage networks, sanitation facilities, electricity infrastructure, and other public assets have been constructed, maintained, and delivered according to approved specifications. Paper-based inspections and disconnected reporting systems can result in incomplete records, delayed reporting, inconsistent asset identification, and difficulties linking observations to precise locations. ArcGIS Field Maps provides an integrated digital approach that enables field teams to access maps, collect georeferenced observations, update asset information, complete structured inspection forms, and synchronize field records with organizational GIS platforms.

The course introduces participants to the ArcGIS Field Maps mobile application and Field Maps Designer, including their roles in preparing maps, configuring field data collection, managing inspection forms, and deploying workflows to mobile teams. Participants will learn how to organize infrastructure asset layers, display relevant project boundaries, configure map symbology, establish appropriate feature templates, and prepare field-ready maps that support inspection activities. The training covers practical considerations for mobile devices, user permissions, hosted feature layers, map sharing, and data management within ArcGIS Online or ArcGIS Enterprise environments. Emphasis is placed on designing field workflows that match inspection objectives, contractor verification requirements, asset management procedures, and project monitoring frameworks.

A major component of the course focuses on developing standardized digital inspection forms that capture consistent, complete, and verifiable information. Participants will learn to structure fields for asset identification, inspection dates, construction status, physical condition, workmanship, compliance with specifications, defects, maintenance requirements, and corrective actions. They will explore required fields, choice lists, conditional questions, default values, related records, photographs, and other supporting evidence where appropriate. The course demonstrates how structured forms can reduce transcription errors, improve comparability between inspection teams, and ensure that important verification information is captured at the point of observation. Participants will also examine how to distinguish direct field observations, documentary evidence, contractor declarations, and findings that require further technical assessment.

The training provides practical guidance on geospatial data collection, location accuracy, and the verification of infrastructure assets in the field. Participants will learn to locate mapped assets, record new features, update existing records, capture inspection points, and document the spatial extent of relevant infrastructure using appropriate point, line, and polygon layers. The course explores built-in device positioning, external Global Navigation Satellite System receivers, GPS metadata, accuracy requirements, and position averaging where suitable for the project. Participants will consider how terrain, vegetation, building obstructions, device limitations, and coordinate reference systems can affect location quality. They will also learn to apply verification checks so that the positional accuracy and supporting evidence meet the requirements of the inspection rather than assuming that every mobile GPS observation is suitable for engineering-grade measurement.

Because infrastructure inspections frequently take place in remote or poorly connected locations, the course addresses offline mapping and field synchronization procedures. Participants will learn how to prepare maps and relevant data for offline use, check that required layers and basemaps are available, download work areas before deployment, and capture observations when internet connectivity is unavailable. The training covers synchronization planning, conflict awareness, duplicate-record prevention, attachment management, and procedures for checking that submitted field records have reached the central system. It also explores quality assurance practices for reviewing missing information, inconsistent asset identifiers, questionable coordinates, incomplete photographs, and unresolved inspection findings. These methods support more reliable collaboration between field inspectors, engineers, project managers, contractors, and monitoring and evaluation teams.

Responsible digital inspection requires more than collecting location data; it also requires clear verification standards, secure information management, transparent decision-making, and accountable follow-up. Participants will learn how to organize evidence for site verification, construction progress monitoring, defect reporting, maintenance inspections, and completion assessments. They will explore dashboards and GIS-based reporting workflows that help teams summarize inspection coverage, identify unresolved defects, monitor corrective actions, and communicate findings to management and funding stakeholders. The course also addresses role-based access, data confidentiality, photographic evidence handling, audit trails, field safety, and the distinction between an observation recorded by an inspector and a formal engineering or contractual determination. By the end of the training, participants will be better prepared to implement practical, repeatable ArcGIS Field Maps workflows that strengthen infrastructure quality assurance, project transparency, asset management, and evidence-based development programme oversight.
