Course Introduction

Aquaculture and fisheries play a critical role in global food security, nutrition, employment, and economic development, especially in coastal and rural communities. This course provides a comprehensive understanding of modern aquaculture systems and sustainable fisheries management practices for improved productivity and resource conservation.

With rising demand for fish protein and declining wild fish stocks, aquaculture has become the fastest-growing food production sector worldwide. This training equips participants with knowledge and skills to develop efficient, sustainable, and profitable aquaculture enterprises while protecting aquatic ecosystems.

Participants will explore freshwater, marine, and brackish water aquaculture systems, including fish farming technologies, hatchery management, feed production, and water quality control. Emphasis is placed on both smallholder and commercial-scale aquaculture development models.

The course also examines fisheries management principles, including stock assessment, fishing regulations, ecosystem-based management, and post-harvest handling systems. Participants will learn how to balance economic utilization of aquatic resources with conservation and sustainability.

Key areas such as aquaculture business development, value chain analysis, fish processing, cold chain logistics, and market systems are also covered. Real-world case studies and practical applications are used throughout the training.

By the end of the course, participants will be able to design, manage, and optimize aquaculture and fisheries systems that are productive, environmentally sustainable, and economically viable.
