Course Introduction
Appreciative Inquiry for Institutional Performance Evaluation is a practical, participatory training course designed to equip professionals with the knowledge and skills required to evaluate institutional performance through a strengths-based, collaborative, and future-oriented approach. The course introduces participants to the principles of Appreciative Inquiry and demonstrates how organizations can identify the conditions that enable effective performance, recognize successful practices, and mobilize existing capabilities to achieve meaningful institutional improvements. It positions evaluation as an opportunity not only to identify performance gaps but also to understand what works well, why it works, and how successful practices can be expanded.
Institutions operate within complex environments shaped by leadership, organizational culture, governance arrangements, staff capabilities, operational systems, stakeholder relationships, and external expectations. Conventional performance evaluations may concentrate heavily on deficiencies, compliance failures, and unmet targets, potentially overlooking the strengths, relationships, and successful experiences that provide a foundation for improvement. This course explores how Appreciative Inquiry can complement established evaluation methods by generating evidence about institutional assets, effective processes, positive deviations, and enabling conditions while maintaining a balanced assessment of performance challenges and areas requiring corrective action.
Participants examine the Appreciative Inquiry framework, including the 4-D cycle of Discovery, Dream, Design, and Destiny, alongside approaches that incorporate Definition as the initial stage of an expanded 5-D cycle. They learn how to define evaluation priorities, identify examples of institutional excellence, envision desired performance outcomes, co-design improvements, and establish mechanisms for sustaining progress. Through structured dialogue, appreciative interviews, stakeholder workshops, and organizational reflection, participants develop practical techniques for uncovering the factors behind successful institutional performance and translating those insights into realistic evaluation questions, findings, and recommendations.
The training emphasizes the integration of appreciative methods with institutional performance measurement, organizational diagnostics, strategic planning, governance reviews, and results-based management. Participants learn to combine qualitative accounts of successful experiences with quantitative indicators, service delivery statistics, staff feedback, operational records, stakeholder assessments, and other relevant evidence. The course also addresses the importance of triangulation, transparent criteria, credible interpretation, and balanced reporting so that strengths-based evaluation does not become an exercise in promoting positive narratives while ignoring underperformance, inequity, risks, or accountability concerns.
A significant component of the course focuses on the practical application of Appreciative Inquiry in diverse institutional settings, including public agencies, universities, nonprofit organizations, healthcare institutions, regulatory bodies, and private-sector organizations. Participants explore how power dynamics, organizational hierarchy, staff trust, cultural differences, and fear of criticism can affect participation and the reliability of evaluation evidence. They develop strategies for inclusive facilitation, ethical engagement, psychological safety, and the representation of different institutional perspectives. Particular attention is given to ensuring that staff, service users, partners, and other stakeholders can contribute meaningfully to identifying organizational strengths and defining priorities for improvement.
By the end of the course, participants will be equipped to design and facilitate Appreciative Inquiry-based institutional performance evaluations that generate actionable evidence, encourage organizational learning, and support sustainable change. They will develop practical evaluation questions, stakeholder engagement plans, interview guides, analysis frameworks, and improvement roadmaps that connect institutional strengths to measurable performance outcomes. The training enables organizations to move from a narrow focus on deficiencies toward a more constructive and evidence-informed approach that recognizes achievements, addresses persistent challenges, strengthens institutional capacity, and supports continuous performance improvement.
