Course Introduction

Applied Data Science for Road Asset Management and Maintenance Training Course provides transportation and infrastructure professionals with practical skills to apply data science, predictive analytics, machine learning, geospatial analysis, and optimization to road asset management. The course focuses on transforming road condition, traffic, maintenance, inspection, weather, financial, and infrastructure data into actionable information for better planning and decision-making.

Road networks consist of interconnected physical assets including pavements, bridges, drainage structures, culverts, road markings, signs, barriers, lighting, traffic control systems, and roadside infrastructure. These assets generate substantial amounts of information through inspections, sensors, surveys, maintenance records, traffic monitoring, geographic information systems, imagery, and financial systems. The course demonstrates how data science can integrate these sources to create more comprehensive views of asset condition and performance.

Participants will learn practical methods for assessing pavement deterioration, predicting asset condition, identifying maintenance requirements, prioritizing interventions, and forecasting future rehabilitation needs. Statistical analysis and machine learning techniques are applied to understand deterioration patterns and determine how traffic loading, environmental conditions, construction characteristics, maintenance history, and asset age influence road performance.

The course also addresses network-level asset management and investment planning. Participants explore how data-driven models can support maintenance prioritization, lifecycle planning, budget allocation, intervention timing, risk assessment, and scenario analysis. Emphasis is placed on connecting technical asset-condition information with financial constraints, service-level requirements, safety considerations, and strategic transportation objectives.

Geospatial analytics and remote-sensing techniques are integrated throughout the course to help participants understand the spatial distribution of road conditions, maintenance needs, traffic patterns, and infrastructure risks. Participants examine how GIS, imagery, mobile data collection, sensor information, and location-based analytics can improve road inventory management, inspection programs, maintenance planning, and network-level decision-making.

Through practical exercises, case studies, predictive modeling, dashboards, scenario analysis, and an applied project, participants develop an end-to-end understanding of data-driven road asset management. By the end of the course, they will be able to identify analytical opportunities, prepare road asset datasets, develop deterioration and maintenance models, prioritize interventions, communicate analytical findings, and support more efficient, transparent, and sustainable road infrastructure management.
