Course Introduction

The Applied Data Science for Energy Demand and Grid Planning Training Course provides a practical and advanced framework for applying data science, statistical analysis, machine learning, forecasting, optimization, and visualization to modern energy systems. The course focuses on transforming electricity consumption, generation, network, weather, market, and infrastructure data into actionable intelligence for demand planning and grid management.

Participants will explore how energy organizations generate and collect large volumes of information from smart meters, supervisory control systems, distributed energy resources, weather services, customer platforms, substations, transmission networks, generation facilities, and electricity markets. The course examines methods for integrating these heterogeneous datasets and preparing them for reliable analysis while addressing missing observations, inconsistent measurements, changing load profiles, and high-frequency operational data.

A central component of the training is advanced energy demand forecasting. Participants learn how to analyze historical load patterns, weather variables, calendar effects, customer behavior, economic indicators, distributed generation, and other factors influencing electricity demand. Statistical and machine learning approaches are introduced for short-term, medium-term, and long-term forecasting, with attention to uncertainty, forecast validation, changing consumption patterns, and operational planning requirements.

The course also examines data science applications for grid planning and system optimization. Participants explore analytical approaches for assessing network demand, generation capacity, congestion, voltage-related indicators, infrastructure utilization, renewable energy integration, storage requirements, and future load growth. Scenario modeling and optimization techniques are used to evaluate alternative planning assumptions and understand how emerging technologies may affect grid requirements.

Emerging issues receive significant attention throughout the program, including renewable generation variability, electric vehicle adoption, battery energy storage, distributed energy resources, demand response, smart grids, prosumer behavior, extreme weather, grid flexibility, digitalization, and increasing electrification. Participants learn how data-driven models can help planners assess uncertainty, identify emerging risks, evaluate alternative scenarios, and support more resilient energy system strategies without treating model outputs as substitutes for engineering judgment.

By the end of the training, participants will be equipped to develop data-driven energy demand and grid planning solutions that combine forecasting, predictive analytics, geospatial analysis, optimization, anomaly detection, scenario modeling, and visualization. Practical exercises and an applied project enable participants to translate complex energy datasets into reliable planning intelligence for utilities, regulators, system operators, energy companies, infrastructure planners, and other energy-sector stakeholders.
