Course Introduction

Money laundering risks continue to evolve as criminals exploit increasingly complex financial products, digital payment channels, corporate structures, cross-border transactions and third-party relationships to conceal the origins and movement of illicit funds. Auditors therefore require a strong understanding of anti-money laundering controls and investigative techniques to evaluate whether organisations can identify, prevent, detect and respond effectively to suspicious financial activity.

The Anti-Money Laundering Audit and Financial Investigation Training Course provides a comprehensive framework for auditing anti-money laundering programmes while developing practical financial investigation capabilities. The programme examines AML governance, customer and counterparty risk, beneficial ownership, transaction monitoring, suspicious activity indicators, sanctions-related exposure, recordkeeping and investigative procedures from an assurance perspective.

Effective AML auditing requires more than checking whether policies exist. Auditors must determine whether controls operate consistently, whether risk assessments reflect actual exposure, whether customer due diligence is appropriately applied, and whether monitoring systems identify meaningful patterns of suspicious activity. Participants will learn how to evaluate the design and operating effectiveness of AML controls using risk-based audit procedures, evidence evaluation and targeted testing techniques.

The course also develops practical financial investigation skills for analysing unusual transactions and tracing potentially illicit financial flows. Participants will examine bank transactions, accounting records, payment instructions, customer profiles, invoices, corporate structures and related-party information to identify anomalies and relationships that may warrant further investigation. Particular attention is given to distinguishing genuine risk indicators from legitimate transactions that may appear unusual without sufficient context.

Technology and data analytics are increasingly important components of AML assurance and financial investigation. The programme explores transaction analytics, customer risk scoring, network analysis, alert assessment, data quality testing, automated monitoring and emerging artificial intelligence applications. Participants will also consider model governance, false positives, explainability, data privacy and human oversight when assessing technology-enabled AML controls.

The programme concludes by bringing together AML auditing, financial investigation, evidence management, reporting, remediation and continuous monitoring. Participants will learn how to communicate significant AML weaknesses, document investigative conclusions, assess financial exposure and support sustainable corrective action. The result is a practical professional development programme for auditors and assurance practitioners seeking to strengthen their organisation’s ability to detect and respond to money laundering and related financial crime risks.
