Course Introduction

Artificial intelligence is creating new possibilities for qualitative and mixed-methods research by helping researchers manage large volumes of textual, audiovisual, and structured evidence. This advanced course explores how generative AI, large language models, multimodal AI, semantic search, intelligent coding, and research automation can augment rigorous qualitative inquiry while preserving researcher interpretation, contextual sensitivity, reflexivity, and methodological integrity.

The programme provides a comprehensive examination of AI applications across the qualitative and mixed-methods research lifecycle, from research problem formulation and literature discovery to sampling, instrument design, data collection, transcription, coding, thematic analysis, interpretation, integration, and reporting. Participants learn to identify where AI can accelerate research processes while recognising tasks that require careful human judgment and disciplinary expertise.

Participants will develop advanced capabilities in AI-assisted qualitative data analysis, including transcript processing, coding, categorisation, thematic development, discourse analysis, narrative analysis, framework analysis, sentiment exploration, and pattern identification. The course emphasises iterative researcher-AI collaboration, enabling participants to use AI as an analytical assistant while maintaining ownership of coding decisions, interpretations, theoretical perspectives, and conclusions.

The mixed-methods component focuses on integrating qualitative insights with quantitative evidence. Participants explore AI-supported techniques for developing convergent, explanatory sequential, exploratory sequential, embedded, and transformative research designs. They learn how AI can help connect qualitative themes with numerical findings, identify areas of convergence and divergence, construct joint displays, and develop integrated interpretations without collapsing fundamentally different forms of evidence.

Advanced attention is given to research quality, trustworthiness, reflexivity, credibility, dependability, confirmability, transferability, validity, and integration quality. Participants learn how to assess AI-generated interpretations, identify hallucinations and contextual distortions, preserve participant meaning, document analytical decisions, and maintain transparent links between raw evidence, codes, themes, statistical findings, and conclusions.

The course also addresses responsible AI use in sensitive qualitative and mixed-methods research. Participants examine confidentiality, privacy, informed consent, cultural and linguistic bias, representation, data sovereignty, intellectual property, research integrity, and ethical governance. By the end of the programme, participants will be able to design sophisticated AI-powered qualitative and mixed-methods workflows that enhance research efficiency while protecting methodological rigour and the richness of human-centred inquiry.
