Course Introduction

AI-enabled impersonation is rapidly changing the nature of communication crises by allowing malicious actors to imitate executives, public officials, employees, brands and trusted institutional voices with increasing realism. Synthetic video, cloned voices, fabricated messages and AI-generated social profiles can create credible false communications that spread quickly across digital channels. This course provides communication professionals with practical capabilities for identifying, assessing and managing AI impersonation incidents before they develop into wider reputational or operational crises.

Modern organisations face a communication environment in which audiences can encounter fabricated statements before official teams have established what happened, who created the material or how widely it has circulated. An impersonated executive announcement, synthetic voice message or fabricated social media post can trigger employee confusion, customer concern, media attention and stakeholder uncertainty. The programme examines how AI impersonation crises develop and provides structured approaches for maintaining control, credibility and clarity when conventional verification processes are under pressure.

Participants explore practical methods for recognising suspicious content and assessing its authenticity using source verification, contextual analysis, digital provenance, metadata, behavioural indicators, linguistic patterns and AI-assisted detection techniques. The course also considers voice cloning, synthetic video, fake executive profiles, manipulated images, fabricated emails and AI-generated documents, enabling participants to understand the different forms an impersonation incident may take and how each can affect communication decision-making.

Effective crisis communication requires more than identifying whether content is genuine or fabricated. Participants therefore learn how to assess severity, audience exposure, potential harm, credibility, timing and distribution patterns before recommending an organisational response. Particular emphasis is placed on evidence preservation, confidence assessment, escalation procedures and cross-functional coordination between communication, cybersecurity, legal, risk, leadership and operational teams, ensuring that responses remain proportionate and defensible.

The programme addresses emerging threats including generative AI, agentic AI, automated influence campaigns, synthetic identities, deepfake voice attacks, artificial engagement, bot amplification and coordinated misinformation. Participants examine how impersonation can be combined with social engineering, fraud, reputational attacks or false narratives to create complex incidents. They also consider the risks of responding too quickly, repeating malicious claims unnecessarily, relying blindly on automated detection systems or making unsupported public attribution.

By completing the course, participants will be equipped to establish effective AI impersonation crisis communication protocols, evaluate suspected incidents, prepare leadership guidance and coordinate rapid, accurate responses across relevant channels. They will develop practical approaches for protecting executive identity, reassuring stakeholders, correcting false information and restoring confidence while maintaining appropriate uncertainty and evidential discipline throughout the incident lifecycle.
