Course Introduction
Mixed-methods research combines qualitative and quantitative approaches to develop richer, more comprehensive answers to complex research questions. The increasing availability of artificial intelligence is creating new opportunities to strengthen this integration by supporting data preparation, qualitative coding, statistical analysis, pattern discovery, evidence synthesis, and interpretation across multiple forms of research data. The AI-Enabled Mixed-Methods Research and Integrated Analysis Training Course provides participants with advanced knowledge for designing and implementing AI-supported mixed-methods research workflows while maintaining methodological rigor and researcher control.
The course examines how artificial intelligence, machine learning, natural language processing, generative AI, and analytical automation can support the complete mixed-methods research lifecycle. Participants explore research design, data collection, data preparation, qualitative analysis, quantitative analysis, integration strategies, joint displays, triangulation, interpretation, and reporting. Particular emphasis is placed on understanding how AI can connect different datasets and analytical approaches without eliminating the methodological distinctions that make mixed-methods research valuable.
Participants learn how to use generative AI and analytical tools to process interviews, focus groups, survey responses, structured datasets, documents, observations, and other research materials. They examine AI-assisted qualitative coding, thematic analysis, text classification, sentiment analysis, data cleaning, exploratory analysis, statistical programming, visualization support, and evidence extraction. The course emphasizes appropriate division of responsibilities between AI systems and researchers, ensuring that automated outputs are systematically reviewed, validated, contextualized, and integrated into defensible research interpretations.
A major focus is the integration of qualitative and quantitative evidence. Participants explore convergent, explanatory sequential, exploratory sequential, embedded, and transformative mixed-methods designs and learn how AI can assist with connecting findings across different analytical strands. Techniques such as semantic matching, clustering, text-to-variable transformation, subgroup analysis, evidence matrices, joint displays, and computational triangulation are examined. Participants also learn how to identify convergence, complementarity, expansion, and divergence between qualitative and quantitative findings.
The course addresses critical challenges associated with AI-enabled mixed-methods research, including hallucination, bias, methodological misalignment, data leakage, over-automation, statistical errors, loss of qualitative nuance, inappropriate inference, reproducibility challenges, and unclear AI attribution. Participants learn practical approaches for validating AI-generated outputs, documenting analytical decisions, preserving source provenance, maintaining research confidentiality, and establishing human-in-the-loop review. Emerging issues around responsible AI, research integrity, synthetic data, multimodal research, and AI-assisted scholarly communication are also explored.
By completing this course, participants will be equipped to design integrated research workflows that use AI strategically across qualitative and quantitative data environments. They will be able to select appropriate AI techniques, structure heterogeneous research datasets, analyze multiple evidence types, integrate findings, evaluate AI-assisted outputs, and communicate results transparently. The course ultimately supports researchers in using AI to improve analytical efficiency and evidence integration while preserving methodological rigor, transparency, researcher reflexivity, and the credibility of research conclusions.
