Course Introduction

AI-Augmented Qualitative Research and Thematic Analysis Training Course provides a comprehensive framework for integrating artificial intelligence into qualitative research while preserving methodological rigor, researcher judgment, contextual understanding, and interpretive depth. The course explores how AI can support researchers throughout the qualitative research lifecycle, from research design and data preparation to coding, theme development, interpretation, reporting, and quality assurance.

The course examines how AI technologies can enhance the analysis of interviews, focus groups, observations, open-ended survey responses, documents, case studies, field notes, and other unstructured or semi-structured qualitative data. Participants learn how to use AI to accelerate repetitive analytical tasks while maintaining human oversight over meaning, context, nuance, cultural interpretation, and theoretical reasoning.

A major emphasis is placed on AI-assisted thematic analysis, including familiarization, initial coding, codebook development, categorization, pattern identification, theme construction, refinement, and interpretation. Participants learn how AI can generate candidate codes and thematic structures while also understanding why machine-generated interpretations must be critically reviewed, validated, contextualized, and refined by qualified researchers.

The course also addresses advanced qualitative research challenges associated with AI, including bias, hallucination, loss of context, over-automation, privacy risks, confidentiality, data governance, researcher positionality, and ethical use of participant information. Participants develop practical strategies for ensuring that AI-supported analysis remains transparent, auditable, ethically defensible, and aligned with established qualitative research standards.

Emerging AI capabilities such as large language models, semantic analysis, retrieval-augmented research workflows, automated transcription, multilingual analysis, conversational coding assistants, and AI-supported qualitative synthesis are examined in relation to contemporary research practice. The course considers both the opportunities and limitations of these technologies, enabling participants to distinguish useful augmentation from inappropriate automation.

By the end of the course, participants will be able to design structured AI-augmented qualitative research workflows, apply AI responsibly to thematic analysis, critically evaluate machine-assisted findings, strengthen analytical consistency, and communicate qualitative insights with greater clarity and credibility. The programme is suitable for researchers seeking to increase analytical efficiency without compromising the depth, reflexivity, and human interpretation that define high-quality qualitative research.

Comprehensive Course Outline

Module 1: Foundations of AI-Augmented Qualitative Research

  • Understand the principles, purposes, and methodological foundations of qualitative research and examine where artificial intelligence can appropriately augment established research practices.

  • Explore the capabilities and limitations of generative AI, large language models, natural language processing, and semantic technologies for qualitative research applications.

  • Examine the evolving role of the researcher when AI contributes to transcription, coding, categorization, synthesis, interpretation, and qualitative evidence organization.

  • Establish practical principles for balancing automation, human judgment, reflexivity, contextual awareness, and methodological integrity throughout AI-supported research.

Module 2: Qualitative Research Design and AI-Assisted Planning

  • Develop research questions, objectives, conceptual frameworks, and qualitative designs that provide a strong methodological foundation for AI-assisted analysis.

  • Examine how AI can support literature exploration, research question refinement, interview-guide development, sampling considerations, and preliminary conceptual mapping.

  • Use AI-assisted workflows to organize research assumptions, theoretical perspectives, stakeholder considerations, and anticipated analytical dimensions without replacing researcher judgment.

  • Identify design-stage risks associated with AI-generated assumptions, confirmation bias, leading questions, methodological misalignment, and inappropriate dependence on automated recommendations.

Module 3: Qualitative Data Collection, Transcription, and Preparation

  • Explore AI-assisted transcription, speaker identification, translation, summarization, and formatting processes for interviews, focus groups, meetings, and observational research.
