Course Introduction

Agroforestry design and climate adaptation represents a transformative approach to land use that integrates trees, crops, and sometimes livestock into a single resilient production system. This course introduces participants to the scientific, ecological, and practical principles that guide agroforestry system planning for climate resilience and sustainable land management.

With increasing climate variability, land degradation, and unpredictable rainfall patterns, agroforestry has become a critical strategy for strengthening agricultural resilience. This training equips participants with the knowledge to design systems that reduce vulnerability while enhancing productivity and ecosystem services.

Participants will explore how trees and woody perennials interact with crops to improve soil fertility, regulate microclimates, enhance water retention, and increase biodiversity. Emphasis is placed on system design tailored to different agro-ecological zones and farming contexts.

The course also highlights climate adaptation strategies, including carbon sequestration, erosion control, drought mitigation, and landscape restoration techniques. These strategies are essential for building long-term resilience in rural and agricultural landscapes.

Practical sessions will guide participants in selecting appropriate tree species, designing spatial arrangements, and integrating agroforestry into existing farming systems without reducing food production efficiency.

By the end of the course, participants will be able to design, implement, and manage agroforestry systems that strengthen climate adaptation, improve livelihoods, and restore degraded ecosystems.
