Course Introduction

Agroecology is an integrated approach to farming that applies ecological principles to agricultural production systems. This course introduces participants to sustainable farming methods that balance productivity, environmental health, and social equity within rural and agricultural landscapes.

Modern agriculture faces challenges such as soil degradation, biodiversity loss, climate change, and increasing production pressures. Agroecology provides a science-based and practice-oriented framework that helps farmers and practitioners design resilient and productive farming systems.

Participants will explore ecological farming practices such as intercropping, crop diversification, organic soil management, natural pest control, and nutrient cycling strategies that reduce dependence on synthetic inputs while improving long-term productivity.

The course also highlights the importance of local knowledge systems and farmer innovation in shaping sustainable agricultural landscapes. It emphasizes participatory approaches that empower communities to co-create resilient farming systems adapted to their environments.

Special focus is placed on climate change adaptation and mitigation, showing how agroecological systems improve carbon sequestration, water retention, and ecosystem stability while ensuring food security and rural livelihoods.

By the end of the course, participants will be equipped with practical skills to design, implement, and evaluate agroecological farming systems that enhance sustainability, resilience, and productivity.
