Introduction

A value chain encompasses the full range of activities required to bring a product or service from its initial design and production stages through marketing, distribution, and support services, ultimately reaching the final consumer. Throughout this process, value is added at each stage, transforming raw agricultural products into market-ready goods that meet consumer demands. For smallholder farmers who form the backbone of crop and livestock production across Africa maximizing the benefits of participation in these value chains depends on their ability to establish strong, strategic linkages with input suppliers, traders, processors, and end markets.

To secure a competitive and influential position within the value chain, smallholder farmers need not only improved access to markets but also the capacity to negotiate fair terms, adopt innovative practices, and engage effectively with other actors. This 10-day training course is designed to empower stakeholders working with farmers in rural, urban, and peri-urban settings by building their skills to analyze, develop, and strengthen agricultural value chains and market linkages. Participants will learn practical approaches to enhance value addition, improve market access, and foster inclusive and sustainable partnerships that benefit smallholder farmers and agribusinesses alike.

This course is designed to equip participants with a comprehensive understanding of agricultural value chain concepts, the identification and analysis of market opportunities, and practical strategies to build and strengthen market linkages. Participants will explore how to map value chains, diagnose constraints, and design interventions that facilitate effective partnerships between producers, processors, traders, and consumers. The course also emphasizes sustainable and inclusive approaches to value chain development, ensuring that women, youth, and marginalized groups benefit equitably.
