Course Introduction

Agricultural extension systems are undergoing rapid transformation driven by digital innovation, climate change pressures, and the need for more inclusive and demand-driven advisory services. This course equips participants with modern tools and approaches for strengthening extension delivery systems.

Traditional extension models have often been criticized for being top-down, inefficient, and poorly aligned with farmers’ real-time needs. Modernization focuses on participatory, ICT-enabled, and farmer-centered extension approaches that improve responsiveness and impact.

Participants will explore institutional reforms, digital agriculture tools, and innovative communication strategies that enhance the effectiveness of extension services. Emphasis is placed on integrating knowledge systems that connect research, extension, and farmers seamlessly.

The course also addresses the role of data-driven decision-making in extension systems. Participants will learn how mobile platforms, remote sensing, and digital advisory systems are reshaping agricultural knowledge dissemination.

Special attention is given to capacity building of extension officers, ensuring they are equipped with modern competencies in facilitation, communication, and technology adoption to better serve farming communities.

By the end of the course, learners will be able to design and implement modernized agricultural extension systems that are efficient, inclusive, and responsive to evolving agricultural challenges.
