Introduction

Agriculture remains the backbone of many economies, and food security is a cornerstone of national stability, health, and prosperity. The Agricultural and Food Security Project Planning Course equips professionals with the knowledge and practical tools needed to design, implement, and evaluate agricultural development and food security initiatives effectively. Participants will gain a deep understanding of project planning approaches that foster sustainable agricultural growth, improve rural livelihoods, and strengthen resilience against food insecurity.

This course introduces the principles of agricultural project design and management, emphasizing a systems-based approach that integrates value chains, natural resource management, and policy alignment. It provides participants with hands-on skills in formulating projects that address the interconnected challenges of productivity, market access, environmental sustainability, and nutrition.

Participants will explore how to conduct situation analyses, engage stakeholders, and apply results-based management techniques to agricultural and food security projects. They will also learn to align their projects with global and regional frameworks such as the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG 2 – Zero Hunger), the African Union’s Agenda 2063, and national agricultural investment plans.

The training emphasizes the use of innovative technologies and climate-smart agriculture practices that enhance productivity and resilience. Topics such as digital agriculture, data analytics, and precision farming are explored to help participants design projects that respond to emerging global trends and challenges.

In addition, the course integrates cross-cutting themes such as gender inclusion, youth engagement, policy coherence, and community participation. Participants will understand how to mainstream these critical dimensions into their project frameworks for greater impact and sustainability.

By the end of the course, participants will have gained the confidence and competence to manage agricultural and food security projects that not only meet immediate needs but also contribute to long-term transformation, resilience, and food system sustainability.
