Course Introduction

Water safety planning is a globally recognized preventive risk management approach designed to ensure safe drinking water from source to consumer. This course provides an advanced understanding of water safety planning frameworks and their critical role in protecting public health and preventing waterborne diseases through systematic risk assessment and control.

The program introduces participants to the World Health Organization (WHO) Water Safety Plan (WSP) methodology, emphasizing hazard identification, risk prioritization, and implementation of effective control measures across entire water supply systems. It highlights how proactive planning reduces contamination risks and strengthens system resilience.

Participants will explore the full water supply chain, including catchment areas, treatment processes, storage systems, and distribution networks. The course demonstrates how vulnerabilities at each stage can affect water quality and how preventive controls can be strategically applied to safeguard public health.

A strong focus is placed on risk assessment tools and operational monitoring procedures used in water safety planning. Learners will gain practical skills in developing monitoring protocols, verification systems, and corrective action plans to ensure continuous water quality assurance.

The course also integrates public health perspectives, linking water quality management with disease prevention, epidemiology, and health risk assessment. It emphasizes the role of water safety planning in reducing outbreaks of cholera, typhoid, and other waterborne diseases, especially in vulnerable communities.

By the end of the course, participants will be able to design, implement, and manage comprehensive water safety plans that ensure safe drinking water supply systems, protect public health, and support sustainable water governance frameworks.
