Course Introduction

Trauma profoundly shapes human behavior, mental health, and social functioning, especially in humanitarian, conflict, and disaster-affected contexts. This course provides an advanced and comprehensive understanding of trauma-informed care principles and psychosocial rehabilitation approaches designed to support individuals and communities recovering from severe psychological and social distress.

Modern humanitarian and social service systems increasingly recognize that effective care must go beyond symptom management to address the deeper psychological, emotional, and social impacts of trauma. This course equips participants with advanced knowledge and practical tools to design interventions that promote healing, resilience, and long-term recovery.

A core focus of the course is understanding the neurobiological, psychological, and social dimensions of trauma. Participants will explore how trauma affects cognition, behavior, relationships, and community dynamics, and how this knowledge informs the design of effective psychosocial rehabilitation programs.

The course also emphasizes trauma-informed care systems that prioritize safety, trust, empowerment, cultural sensitivity, and collaboration. Participants will learn how to integrate these principles into service delivery across humanitarian, healthcare, and social work settings to ensure non-retraumatizing support systems.

In addition, the course explores rehabilitation strategies for individuals experiencing complex trauma, including displaced populations, survivors of violence, children in crisis settings, and individuals with long-term psychosocial challenges. Evidence-based therapeutic and community-based interventions are examined in depth.

By the end of the course, participants will be able to design, implement, and evaluate advanced trauma-informed and psychosocial rehabilitation programs that strengthen resilience, restore dignity, and promote long-term recovery in affected populations.
