Course Introduction

The Advanced Strategic Planning for Water Infrastructure Systems Course is designed to equip professionals with high-level competencies in designing, implementing, and managing long-term strategic plans for water infrastructure systems. It focuses on building resilient, efficient, and sustainable infrastructure capable of meeting growing demand and environmental challenges.

Water infrastructure systems are increasingly under pressure due to rapid urbanization, climate variability, aging assets, and rising service expectations. This course provides participants with the strategic tools and methodologies required to address these challenges through integrated planning approaches that align infrastructure development with long-term sector goals.

A key focus of the course is the development of comprehensive strategic planning frameworks that incorporate technical, financial, institutional, and environmental dimensions. Participants will learn how to conduct needs assessments, forecast demand, prioritize investments, and design phased infrastructure development plans that maximize impact and sustainability.

The course also emphasizes data-driven decision-making and evidence-based planning. Participants will explore how to use GIS, modeling tools, asset data, and performance indicators to support infrastructure planning decisions that are accurate, transparent, and aligned with national development priorities.

Emerging challenges such as climate change, resource scarcity, and technological disruption are reshaping how water infrastructure systems are planned and managed. This course integrates modern approaches such as smart infrastructure planning, digital water systems, and climate-resilient design principles to ensure future-ready infrastructure development.

By the end of the course, participants will be able to design strategic infrastructure plans, optimize resource allocation, integrate sustainability principles, and lead planning processes that ensure efficient, resilient, and equitable water infrastructure systems.
