Course Introduction

Migration and displacement are increasingly complex global challenges shaped by conflict, climate change, economic instability, and social inequalities. This course provides an advanced exploration of social work strategies designed to support displaced populations through practical, evidence-based, and context-responsive interventions rooted in rights-based and trauma-informed practice.

Participants will examine the structural, political, and socioeconomic factors influencing migration dynamics, analyzing how global systems, border policies, humanitarian architectures and host-community conditions shape the experiences and vulnerabilities of displaced populations. The course emphasizes both micro-level casework and macro-level systems advocacy, ensuring a comprehensive professional skill set.

Learners will explore practical tools for case management, psychosocial support, protection interventions, community mobilization, and multi-agency coordination in displacement contexts. Through scenario-based learning and real-world case studies, participants will build the competencies required to navigate high-pressure environments while upholding ethical and culturally sensitive practice.

The course highlights the unique vulnerabilities of specific groups—children, women, the elderly, persons with disabilities, and stateless individuals—while emphasizing inclusive strategies that promote dignity, safety and access to essential services. Participants also examine the intersection of migration with livelihoods, housing, education, health, and legal protection systems.

Recognizing the evolving nature of displacement, the course integrates emerging issues such as climate-induced migration, urban displacement, digital documentation systems, and cross-border protection challenges. These topics enable participants to anticipate future trends and adapt interventions to rapidly shifting migration realities.

Ultimately, this course prepares social work professionals to respond effectively to complex displacement crises by combining strategic thinking, field-based practice, and collaborative approaches. Graduates will be equipped to support migrants, influence policy, strengthen systems, and contribute to resilient, inclusive communities.
