Course Introduction

The Advanced Social Work Strategies for Health Equity and Social Determinants Course provides an in-depth exploration of how social, economic, environmental, and structural factors shape health outcomes across populations. It equips social work professionals with the analytical and practical skills needed to address health inequities through integrated, evidence-based, and systems-focused interventions that go beyond traditional clinical approaches.

This course examines the complex relationship between social determinants of health—such as income, education, housing, employment, and access to services—and their impact on individual and community wellbeing. Participants learn how to identify systemic barriers that contribute to unequal health outcomes and how to design interventions that address root causes rather than surface-level symptoms.

Learners are introduced to interdisciplinary frameworks that connect public health, social work, policy analysis, and community development. The course emphasizes the importance of cross-sector collaboration in addressing health inequities and strengthening community resilience, particularly among vulnerable and marginalized populations.

A strong focus is placed on applying equity-driven approaches in program design, case management, and policy advocacy. Participants develop skills to integrate health equity principles into social work practice, ensuring that interventions are inclusive, culturally responsive, and grounded in human rights and social justice values.

The course also addresses emerging challenges such as climate-related health disparities, urban inequality, digital health access gaps, and the long-term effects of pandemics on social systems. These issues are reshaping how health equity is understood and require innovative, adaptive social work responses.

Ultimately, this course prepares social workers to become leaders in advancing health equity through strategic, data-informed, and community-centered approaches. Graduates will be equipped to influence policy, strengthen systems, and implement impactful programs that reduce disparities and improve population health outcomes.
