Course Introduction

Advanced Mixed-Methods Research Design and Data Integration Training Course provides a comprehensive framework for designing, implementing, analyzing, and integrating quantitative and qualitative research within a single coherent investigation. The course examines how researchers can combine numerical evidence with contextual, experiential, and interpretive information to answer complex research questions that cannot be adequately addressed through one methodological approach alone. Participants learn how to develop mixed-methods research questions, select appropriate designs, establish methodological priorities, plan data collection, analyze different forms of evidence, and integrate findings into coherent conclusions.

The training introduces the philosophical and methodological foundations of mixed-methods research, including pragmatism, critical realism, transformative approaches, and other perspectives that support the integration of quantitative and qualitative evidence. Participants explore the differences between methodological integration, simple parallel use of methods, and genuine mixed-methods research. Particular emphasis is placed on understanding when integration adds explanatory, complementary, developmental, triangulatory, or expansive value and when combining methods may introduce unnecessary complexity, resource requirements, or conflicting assumptions.

A major component of the course focuses on advanced mixed-methods research design. Participants examine convergent, explanatory sequential, exploratory sequential, embedded, transformative, multiphase, and other mixed-methods designs. They learn how to determine the appropriate sequence and timing of quantitative and qualitative components, establish priority between strands, connect sampling strategies, develop linked research questions, and determine points at which datasets should be integrated. The training emphasizes methodological coherence so that the quantitative and qualitative components contribute meaningfully to a unified research purpose rather than functioning as disconnected studies.

The course provides detailed coverage of data integration strategies across the research lifecycle. Participants learn how to connect datasets during research planning, sampling, data collection, analysis, interpretation, and reporting. Techniques such as connecting, building, merging, embedding, triangulation, joint displays, data matrices, framework integration, case-based comparison, and narrative integration are explored. Participants also examine how qualitative themes can explain quantitative patterns, how quantitative results can inform qualitative sampling or questioning, and how apparently contradictory findings can be investigated rather than automatically treated as methodological failure.

Advanced analytical issues are addressed through practical consideration of data transformation, sequential analysis, multilevel evidence, case selection, integration of heterogeneous datasets, mixed-methods sampling, and interpretation of convergent and divergent findings. The course also explores the use of qualitative software, statistical platforms, spreadsheets, visualization tools, research repositories, and computational workflows to organize and integrate complex evidence. Particular attention is given to maintaining data provenance, transparent analytical decisions, reproducibility, documentation, and clear separation between findings generated within individual methodological strands and conclusions generated through their integration.

Emerging developments in mixed-methods research are incorporated throughout the course, including digital and online research, real-world evidence, large-scale administrative datasets, artificial intelligence-assisted qualitative analysis, automated text processing, multimodal data, participatory research, implementation science, and complex evaluation designs. Participants learn how emerging technologies can support integration while recognizing limitations involving algorithmic bias, privacy, data governance, model transparency, methodological compatibility, and human oversight. By the end of the course, participants can develop defensible mixed-methods protocols and produce integrated evidence that is methodologically rigorous, transparent, contextually meaningful, and useful for research, evaluation, practice, and decision-making.
