Introduction

Land use conflicts have become a pressing global concern as competing demands for land resources intensify due to urbanization, industrial expansion, agricultural development, and environmental conservation. Addressing these conflicts requires advanced analytical tools that can reveal spatial patterns of inequality, environmental degradation, and contested resource use.

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) offer a powerful framework for analyzing, mapping, and visualizing land use disputes while supporting decision-making processes that emphasize fairness, equity, and sustainability. By integrating social, environmental, and economic data, GIS provides evidence to mediate conflicts and promote environmental justice.

This course delves into the advanced applications of GIS for understanding how land use decisions disproportionately affect marginalized communities. Participants will explore how spatial inequities can be identified, quantified, and addressed through geospatial analysis and participatory mapping approaches.

Special attention will be given to environmental justice frameworks that evaluate access to land, water, energy, and ecosystem services. Learners will gain insights into how GIS can be used to strengthen advocacy, influence policy, and design inclusive solutions to land use conflicts.

The program also highlights emerging approaches such as spatial multi-criteria decision-making, conflict-sensitive land management, and the integration of GIS with participatory methods for community engagement. Real-world case studies from urban, rural, and cross-boundary contexts will enrich learning and illustrate practical applications.

By the end of the course, participants will acquire the technical and analytical capacity to apply advanced GIS methods in land use conflict resolution, environmental justice studies, and sustainable resource governance, ultimately driving fairer and more resilient development pathways.
