Course Introduction

Fisheries cooperatives provide an important institutional framework for fishers, fish farmers, processors, traders, and other value-chain actors to collectively improve access to inputs, finance, technology, markets, infrastructure, and bargaining power. However, increasing resource pressures, climate variability, market volatility, regulatory requirements, post-harvest losses, and changing consumer expectations require fisheries cooperatives to adopt more professional and sustainable management approaches. This course provides advanced knowledge for strengthening cooperative governance, commercial performance, fisheries enterprise development, and sustainable value-chain participation.

The programme examines the complete fisheries value chain, from production and harvesting through landing, aggregation, cold storage, processing, transportation, marketing, distribution, and final consumption. Participants will learn how cooperative structures can improve resource sharing, reduce transaction costs, strengthen quality control, increase market access, and capture more value for members.
