Course Introduction

Climate change is rapidly reshaping agricultural systems across the globe, affecting productivity, food security, and rural livelihoods. Increasing temperatures, unpredictable rainfall patterns, droughts, floods, and extreme weather events are placing unprecedented pressure on farming systems. This course provides a comprehensive understanding of climate-smart agriculture (CSA) as a strategic approach to sustainably increase productivity while building resilience and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Resilient food systems are essential for ensuring that communities can withstand and recover from climate-related shocks while maintaining stable access to safe and nutritious food. This training explores how agricultural systems can be transformed through climate adaptation strategies, sustainable land management, improved resource efficiency, and ecosystem-based approaches that strengthen long-term food security.

Participants will examine how climate-smart agriculture integrates three core pillars: productivity enhancement, adaptation and resilience building, and mitigation of climate change impacts. The course highlights practical interventions such as conservation agriculture, agroforestry, improved water management, climate-resilient crop varieties, and livestock adaptation strategies that support sustainable agricultural transformation.

The course also emphasizes the importance of data, climate information services, and early warning systems in supporting farmers and decision-makers. Participants will learn how climate forecasting, remote sensing, and digital advisory services can be used to guide agricultural planning, reduce risks, and improve preparedness for climate shocks in vulnerable regions.

Policy and institutional frameworks play a critical role in enabling climate-smart agriculture adoption at scale. This course explores national and global climate policies, financing mechanisms, carbon markets, and incentive structures that support resilient food systems. It also highlights the role of public-private partnerships and community-driven approaches in accelerating climate action in agriculture.

By the end of this course, participants will be equipped with advanced knowledge and practical skills to design, implement, and evaluate climate-smart agricultural interventions that enhance resilience, improve productivity, and ensure sustainable food systems in the face of climate change.
