Course Introduction

Climate risk finance has become a critical discipline as financial institutions, governments, and corporations increasingly confront the economic consequences of climate change. Rising physical risks such as floods, droughts, and extreme weather events, alongside transition risks from decarbonization policies, require advanced financial planning and resilience strategies.

This course provides a comprehensive and technical understanding of climate risk assessment, financial modeling, and resilience planning frameworks. Participants will explore how climate risks are quantified, priced, and integrated into financial decision-making across sectors and asset classes.

The program examines both physical and transition climate risks and their implications for banking, insurance, investment portfolios, and public finance systems. It emphasizes how climate stress testing and scenario analysis are used to build resilient financial systems.

A strong focus is placed on climate risk finance instruments, including catastrophe bonds, resilience bonds, insurance-linked securities, and climate contingency funds. Participants will understand how these tools help transfer and mitigate climate-related financial exposure.

The course also addresses strategic resilience planning, including infrastructure adaptation, urban resilience finance, and national climate risk budgeting. It highlights how governments and institutions can proactively manage long-term climate uncertainty.

By the end of the course, participants will be able to design climate risk finance strategies and resilience frameworks that protect financial stability while supporting sustainable development objectives.
