Course Introduction

Advanced audit planning and financial risk assessment form the foundation of effective, efficient, and defensible audit engagements. High-quality audit work depends on the auditor's ability to understand the organisation, identify significant financial reporting risks, assess the likelihood and potential impact of misstatement, determine appropriate materiality, and translate risk assessments into focused audit procedures. This course develops the advanced capabilities required to perform these activities systematically.

The programme provides a comprehensive approach to understanding an organisation's business model, financial reporting environment, governance arrangements, internal controls, accounting processes, industry conditions, and external risk factors. Participants will learn how to connect this understanding to financial statement assertions, significant account balances, transaction classes, disclosures, and management judgments, creating a stronger foundation for engagement-level risk assessment and audit planning.

A major emphasis is placed on identifying and assessing inherent, control, fraud, detection, liquidity, valuation, reporting, and operational risks that may affect financial information. Participants will explore how complexity, uncertainty, change, management incentives, unusual transactions, technology dependence, estimation, and external pressures can increase financial reporting risk and require differentiated audit responses.

The course also examines advanced approaches to materiality, audit scope, sampling, resource allocation, timing, staffing, specialist involvement, control reliance, substantive procedures, and analytical review. Participants will learn how to develop risk-responsive audit strategies that focus effort on areas of greatest significance while maintaining sufficient coverage of lower-risk areas and ensuring that audit evidence supports the final conclusions.

Modern audit planning increasingly relies on data analytics, automated risk assessment, continuous monitoring, artificial intelligence, and forward-looking risk intelligence. Participants will therefore examine how technology can support population analysis, anomaly detection, risk scoring, journal-entry assessment, trend analysis, control monitoring, and audit prioritisation while maintaining professional skepticism, appropriate human oversight, evidence integrity, and confidentiality.

By the end of the course, participants will be able to develop sophisticated audit plans that respond directly to assessed financial risks and changing business conditions. They will be equipped to challenge risk assumptions, identify significant and emerging risks, establish appropriate materiality, allocate audit resources effectively, design responsive procedures, document professional judgments, and communicate the resulting audit strategy clearly to engagement teams, management, audit committees, and other stakeholders.
