Course Introduction

Activity-Based Costing (ABC) provides a structured approach for assigning indirect and overhead costs to products, services, customers, processes, and other cost objects based on the activities that consume organizational resources. Activity-Based Costing and Cost Audit Training Course develops the practical skills required to understand, evaluate, test, and audit ABC systems, with particular emphasis on cost-driver selection, activity analysis, allocation accuracy, data reliability, and internal control effectiveness.

Traditional allocation methods can sometimes obscure the actual resources consumed by products, services, departments, customers, or projects. ABC addresses this challenge by identifying activities, determining their resource consumption, and assigning costs using appropriate cost drivers. From an audit perspective, however, the effectiveness of an ABC model depends on the quality of its underlying assumptions, source data, allocation rules, system configuration, and management controls. This course enables participants to critically assess whether ABC calculations are reasonable, consistent, transparent, and adequately supported.

Participants will explore how to audit activity identification, resource pools, activity cost pools, cost-driver rates, activity volumes, and cost assignments. The course examines common areas of risk, including inappropriate activity definitions, unsupported driver assumptions, inaccurate activity volumes, outdated allocation rates, double counting, arbitrary cost allocations, and inconsistent treatment of shared resources. Participants will learn how to design audit procedures that address these risks and produce sufficient and appropriate audit evidence.

Cost audit work also requires auditors to understand the operational processes underlying reported costs. The course therefore connects ABC analysis with procurement, production, logistics, customer service, information technology, administration, inventory management, project activities, and other resource-consuming processes. Participants will learn how to compare accounting information with operational data and investigate discrepancies between reported activity levels and actual business operations.

The course incorporates data analytics and technology-enabled audit procedures to address increasingly sophisticated costing environments. Participants will examine how ERP systems, costing applications, automated allocation engines, cloud platforms, business intelligence tools, and artificial intelligence can affect activity-based costing. They will also consider cybersecurity, access management, system changes, data integrity, automated calculations, and the risk of unauthorized manipulation of costing parameters.

By completing the course, participants will be able to evaluate the design and effectiveness of ABC systems, test activity and cost-driver data, assess allocation methodologies, investigate unusual cost assignments, perform analytical and substantive audit procedures, and communicate findings to management. Practical exercises and case studies provide opportunities to apply ABC audit techniques to realistic costing, expenditure, operational efficiency, and financial control situations.
