Course Introduction

Accounts receivable is a significant financial risk area because organizations manage large volumes of customer balances, invoices, receipts, credit notes, refunds, adjustments, write-offs, and collection transactions. The Accounts Receivable Fraud Investigation Training Course provides a practical framework for detecting, investigating, documenting, quantifying, and preventing fraud and financial manipulation throughout the accounts receivable lifecycle.

The course examines common accounts receivable fraud schemes, including fictitious customers, fraudulent receipts, lapping, unauthorized credit notes, manipulated customer balances, false write-offs, concealed collections, diverted payments, duplicate refunds, unauthorized discounts, and inappropriate account adjustments. Participants will learn how these schemes can exploit weaknesses in customer master data, billing, collections, cash application, reconciliations, approval controls, and system access.

Participants will develop investigative techniques for reconciling customer accounts with invoices, receipts, bank statements, sales records, credit notes, refund documentation, collection activity, and general ledger balances. Particular emphasis is placed on tracing transactions across systems and identifying gaps between amounts billed, amounts collected, amounts deposited, and amounts ultimately recorded in the accounting system.

The course integrates forensic accounting and data analytics techniques to identify unusual customer activity, abnormal payment timing, duplicate receipts, unusual credit balances, excessive write-offs, suspicious refunds, delayed cash application, account movements, and employee-customer relationships. Participants will learn how analytical procedures can identify high-risk transactions for detailed investigation while reducing reliance on manual review.

Modern accounts receivable environments create additional risks through automated billing, online customer portals, electronic payments, mobile collections, integrated ERP systems, artificial intelligence, and cloud-based financial platforms. The course addresses emerging risks involving compromised accounts, unauthorized customer-master changes, payment diversion, synthetic customers, manipulated electronic evidence, automated transaction abuse, and cyber-enabled collection fraud.

Through practical case studies and investigation exercises, participants will learn how to move from an AR anomaly or fraud allegation to investigation planning, evidence collection, transaction tracing, interviews, financial reconstruction, loss quantification, root cause analysis, reporting, recovery, and control improvement. The program strengthens professional skepticism, investigative judgment, financial analysis, evidence evaluation, and practical fraud prevention capabilities.
